First Generation Diesel Unit

Notes regarding NC F-units:

  • A feature of all F's was that the A units were not equipped with steam generators, but the B units were so equipped.
  • One A unit on the roster was painted solid black at one point.
  • At some point in their lives on the NC, shop forces removed most of the side skirting around the fuel tanks.
  • Even the F-3's were equipped with Farr grilles.
  • A "Diesel unit" on the NC was considered to be an A-B lashup of 2 engines.
