Luther M. Powers

My grandfather, Luther M. Powers was the last baggage master assigned to the run the City of Memphis. I can remember riding the baggage car with him in about 1956 or 1957. I think I walked directly from the passenger compartment into the baggage area. I have many fond memories of visiting my grandfather on his caboose in the yard. Locations of personal interest to me are along the Memphis to Nashville and Memphis to Lexington, Tennessee, lines as those are the ones I rode with my grandfather.

He was so distraught at the loss of the N.C.&St.L. identity that he retired in 1957 with 41 years service.
